PM Suyra Ghar Yojana

What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

In the Interim Budget 2024-25, the Finance Minister announced a new rooftop solar scheme. Following this, the Prime Minister launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana on 15th February 2024. This scheme aims to support 1 crore households by providing subsidies for the installation of rooftop solar panels.

The initiative is designed to help residential households generate their own electricity through solar energy, reducing their dependence on the grid and cutting down electricity bills. Under this scheme, the Central Government will provide substantial subsidies—covering up to 40% of the installation cost—which will be directly credited to the beneficiary’s bank account. In addition, heavily concessional bank loans will be offered to ensure there is minimal financial burden on the people.

This scheme is especially beneficial for poor and middle-class families, enabling them to save up to Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 18,000 crores annually. Households will not only get free solar electricity but can also earn by selling excess power back to electricity distribution companies.
